FSAPS MODEL UNITED NATIONS TEAM STUDENTS WON FOUR AWARDS IN 2015 INTERNATIONAL MODEL UNITED NATIONS IN NEW YORK

Members of the FSAPS Model United Nations team returned from their trip to New York City on Saturday. Representing the Uzbekistan, These students participated in the 10th Annual Global Classrooms UNA-USA International Middle School Model UN Conference, where they competed with over 1700 students from 13 countries.

Arriving in the city early, students braved the rain, wind, and even snow as they took in the many sites and shopping opportunities. This included the Statue of Liberty, Central Park, riding the subway.

The conference was opened with a ceremony at the United Nations Headquarters before moving to several floors of the Grand Hyatt hotel next to Grand Central Station. During the trip, students had many opportunities to ride the subway to visit far-flung places in the city, such as Central Park, Times Square (awe-inspiring at night), and the Statue of Liberty, among others. For many, buying sacks of candy at the venerable FAO Schwarz, gaming at the World of Nintendo, and eating at the many different restaurants was as exciting the competition itself.

The students had a great time participating in the conference, where they were split into various councils to discuss important issues facing the world today. During this time, students made friends with their peers from schools the US and around the world to present positions and resolutions to these issues.

This conference produced a terrific showing by FSAPS students in which several awards and honors were bestowed on our delegation.

In the World Health Organization, looking at ways to combat infectious diseases such as malaria and tuberculosis, Shreya Rekapalli and Aditi Tekkam were named Outstanding Delegation and also took the award for Best Position Paper. This is a terrific achievement, having one delegation win two awards at the same conference.

In addition, two of our delegations received Honorable Mention for their work in their respective councils. Chloe Richardson and Sophie Chan, representatives of the UN Women organization dedicated to gender equality and empowerment of women, specifically girls’ education and Sanjeev Uppaluri and Jaeden Amiri-Owens discussing Chemical and Waste Management in the UN Environmental Programme.

The team also had impressive results from Christina Wang and Kian Najaf, exploring ways to combat racism as part of the Third Committee of the General Assembly - Social, Humanitarian & Cultural as well as Sophie Richardson and Sparsh Kudrimoti who debated sustainable energy in the UN Development Program.

We are extremely proud of the hard work our students put into preparing for the conference and for their performance. These students were gracious, dignified, and represented FSAPS in the best possible light. Most of all each had a great experience and created memories that will last a lifetime.

2015 FSAPS SPRING BOOK DRIVE & BOOK CHARACTER DRESS UP DAY WAS A HUGE SUCCESS!

Thank you for making the Student Council/ PVO book drive a huge success! We have received over 2300 books! After spring break we begin the task of sorting books to place them in their new home of either the media center, reading room, classroom libraries or we will be offering them to our book drive partner Read-It-Again for credit towards more books for our libraries.

The competition was fierce with girls in the lead for the first week, then it toggled back in forth each day with the number of books donated mounting. It was an exciting competition and at the end of the day the girls won. The girls will be receiving ice cream sandwiches or fruit pops on Friday 4/3 at lunch time. The boys will have the option to buy a frozen treat for $2.00.

If you didn't get the opportunity to send in your gently used books don't worry we will do this again next year!

PRE-K & KINDERGARTEN HANDS ON SCIENCE CLUB

Pre-K and kindergarten Hands-On Science loves animals! We have had such a blast this semester talking about everything from skunks to lions, from peregrine falcons to chameleons! This past week, in honor of Character Dress Up Day, we talked about one of Mrs. Whitlock's favorite characters, the Very Hungry Caterpillar. We read The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle and then looked at the life cycle of caterpillars as they grow into a butterfly.

Sumo-bots. It is exactly what it sounds like; two robots in an arena, with the major purpose to knock the other robot out of the area. This is a competition revolving around power, programming, and building skills. It involves making sure your own robot has enough friction and protection to not be knocked out of the arena, while also making sure it has enough power to knock the other robot out. This helps students develop their programming and building skills.

Sumo-bot Competition Rules
Two self-controlled robots are placed in a ring. The robots try to avoid falling or being pushed out by the opponent robot. The first robot that touches outside of the ring loses the round. Once a robot wins two rounds, the team wins the match. Different robots compete one-on-one against each other throughout the contest. The robot that wins the most matches wins the contest.

Dimensions
Mini-class Sumo robots may be 25 centimeters (9.87 inches) or less in width and 25 centimeters (9.87 inches) or less in depth. There is no height limit! Once a round starts, the robot may twist, fall, or expand without size limits.

Harmless
At all times, robot behavior must be non-offensive, non-destructive, and non-harmful to humans, robots, and the facilities. During inspection (and at any time during the event), the judges may require safety changes or other modifications to meet the harmlessness requirement.

Contest Etiquette
Competitors and audience members are expected to remain polite, sportsmanlike, and considerate at all times. Good cheers, encouragement, and applause for all competitors are very much appreciated.

The Match
Here are the player responsibilities for the match:
1) Draw a start position card from the referee
2) Place the bot in the ring as directed by the referee
3) Press the start button on the bot when directed by the referee. After 5 seconds the bot may begin moving.
4) Move back at least 3 feet from the edge of the ring
5) Catch any bot that is out of the ring and turn it off
6) Place the bot back in a holding area between matches. A contestant may make adjustments between matches, but may not leave the holding area.

Basic Rules
Participants agree to the following basic rules:
1) One match will consist of three rounds, each round is a total of 2 minutes. The team who wins two rounds wins the match and advances in the bracket.
2) The match will be stopped and a rematch will ensue when it is apparent that neither bot is making any progress for duration of about 4 seconds as determined by the referee.
3) If a part on the bot comes off that is less than 15 grams, the round will continue.
4) A player has 30 seconds to correct a problem between rounds.
5) If a player utters inappropriate words, the referee may disqualify the contestant.
6) The referee has the final decision in a match.
