FSAPS STUDENTS HAD A GREAT TIME AT SPACE CAMP

Students returned from Space Camp during Mother's Day and they gave roses to their mothers who came to school to welcome them.

LEAF AND TREE STUDY WALK

On Saturday, 2nd May, Elementary Science Olympians studying Leaf and Tree Finders went on a Tree Identification Nature Walk. Kavitha Kuppusamy, Lakshya Jasti, Raaga Ajay and Niyomi Shah spent two hours on Big Creek Greenways with their coach Ms. Doraiswami. They identified and saw the leaves, bark, fruit, seed balls etc. of many trees from their list of 20+ trees including Black Tupelo, Loblolly Pine, American Sweetgum, American Sycamore, Yellow Poplar, River Birch and Red Maple. They ran short races with Avinash on the boardwalk, drank water, took notes, had cookies, saw a green snake whip hrough the water into swamp grass, saw a duck, drake and ducklings swim in the water, saw some bracket fungi and had a lot of fun! Each student had a parent accompany them on the walk and they served as backpack carriers, water bearers and pullers of tall branches!

Leaf and Tree Finders are preparing hard for their State Tournament on May 16th and this Nature Walk helped them get a hands on work for their event. Thank you for putting this together Ms. Przedpelski & Ms. Minor!

SPRING BREAK TURKEY TRIP WAS LOTS OF FUN!

FSAPS students, teachers and parents enjoyed another wonderful Turkey Trip this spring break. Our group visited Istanbul, Izmir (Aegean Coast) and Antalya (Mediterranean Coast). Next year, beside the Turkey Trip, we will also offer a Costa Trip to our families. Please see some pictures from this year's trip here:

JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH - THE MUSICAL FIELD TRIP

On Friday, March 20th the Kindergarten - 5th Grade students traveled to the Alliance Theatre in downtown Atlanta to see James and the Giant Peach - The Musical. This was a fun musical based on the book written by Raold Dahl. It showed the story of a young English orphan beginning to image a bright future. He went on a journey in a larger-than-life enchanted peach. His companions were a zany bunch of insects brought to life by nimble actors. Out FSAPS students enjoyed the fun songs and silly characters during the performance. Our students were very well behaved and showed great theatre etiquette during the performance. It was a fun day for the FSAPS Elementary students!

1ST GRADE STUDENTS ENJOYED TELLUS MUSEUM VISIT

First grade students had a terrific time at the Galactic Weather exhibit of the Tellus Science Museum! Students have been studying weather at FSA, and this was a perfect hands-on review for us! We explored weather instruments, discussed types of clouds, and talked about weather on other planets. Students were also able to explore a few of the museum galleries!

SCIENCE OLYMPIAD ENTOMOLOGY TEAM FIELD TRIP TO UGH

On Saturday, November 8th Science Olympiad Entomology students Katherine Li, Sarah Lucas, Soleil Moffit, and Isabella Sims along with coaches Mrs. Stathos, Mrs. Butler, and parent driver Malisa Sims visited the UGA entomology department. Entomology is the study of insects and we were out for an education!






Several UGA undergrad students were there to greet us and introduced us to some live insects. They then introduced us to Nancy Miorelli, a graduate student in entomology. We learned that Nancy had taught several classes including Entomology for Teachers, Forensic Entomology, as well as the Ecuador Term Abroad-Insect Natural History & Plant Biology. It was wonderful to have access to a scientist so knowledgeable and passionate about her subject!


She began our adventure by bringing out various bug collections and even allowing us to view the insects under special microscopes while she explained how to identify them and how they impact our lives. We got a short course in forensic entomology and how scientists use insects that inhabit decomposing remains to aid legal investigations. Very interesting! We then explored mouth parts, leg, antennae, and wing adaptations, adaptations to different environments, and how insects mimic both other insects and the environment.

ART BARN FIELD TRIP WAS FARM-TASTIC!

Fulton Science Academy elementary grade students in Kindergarten through 2nd grade visited Farmer Sue and her fabulous Art Barn on Friday, November 7. All the kids participated in a hayride, had a tutorial on the life cycle of the chicken (from egg to adult), learned all about beekeeping and pollination, had a picnic lunch, and created a painting of a sheep in the Art Barn! However, the BEST part about visiting the Art Barn was learning about and interacting with all of the rescued animals on the farm. From baby chicks to donkeys, this farm has friendly animals in all shapes and sizes! We thank Farmer Sue very much for the wonderful day. Please see some pictures below:

CONSOLIDATED GOLD MINES MIDDLE SCHOOL FIELD TRIP

Our middle school students had the opportunity to step back in to history, 1828. We visited the gold mines in Dahlonega, Georgia. Twenty years before the 1849 Gold Rush, gold was discovered there. The students were able to see where it all happened, deep underground. Students also had the opportunity to pan for gold and some gems for themselves. We all walked away a little richer.

ELEMENTARY STUDENTS ENJOYED CHATTAHOOCHEE NATURE CENTER FIELD TRIP

The third, fourth, and fifth grade classes had a superb time visiting the Chattahoochee Nature Center for their first field trip of the 2014-2015 school year! Each of the classes was taken on their own guided tour by a Naturalist who helped them stock up on interactive science facts pertinent to their different grade levels. Students saw various bird species, including owls, hawks, falcons, and even an eagle! They also saw frogs, turtles, and a beaver's dam! Each class also had a close encounter with one of the center's animal residents! The students all enjoyed a group lunch on the pavilion near the lake, and they concluded their visit with an exploration of the Discovery Center. 

KINDERGARTEN THROUGH 2ND GRADE ART BARN FIELD TRIP - NOVEMBER 7TH, 2014

FSAPS STUDENTS LOVED BERRY PATCH FARMS TRIP

Kindergarten through 2nd grade students had such a wonderful time at Berry Patch Farms last Friday! The students had a blast riding the hay ride, picking pumpkins, and taking fun fall pictures. The students were especially excited to try the homemade apple cider and observe the farm animals. Once the students were given lunch, the elementary teachers and parent volunteers set up fall centers for the students. The students rotated to each center where they heard fall stories, learned how to line dance, had their faces painted, and made a fall craft. What a great day for FSA!

FSAPS STUDENTS ENJOYED A GREAT CABIN CAMP!

FSA Robotics Team attended a wonderful cabin camp at Lake Lanier this past weekend. They spent all day working on their robots, presentations, and programming. When they weren't sleeping, eating, or working, they went outside and explored the acres of land. They went down to the lake and walked around on the dock. At night they sat around a campfire and roasted marshmallows, while they bonded as a team. Keep up the great work robotics team! This is what we call team spirit! Way to go!

Robotics team built and worked on 2014 FLL challenge projects and the robot. They used the New Lego Mindstorms platform EV3. In the camp, students were introduced important and complex aspects of Lego Mindstorms NXT and EV3 platform such as how to calibrate servomotors and color sensors.

A group of students from Future City Team and Turkish Olympiad Team joined the camp as well. Students had wonderful time, while preparing for their academic competitions.

ANIME WEEKEND ATLANTA FIELD TRIP WAS FUN FOR EVERYONE!

This past Saturday, the FSAPS Anime Club students traveled to the AWA convention in Atlanta. Students and chaperones participated in workshops, selected to attend various panel presentations of interest, and watched shows where artists used Anime as a springboard for dramatic, visual, and/or musical interpretation.

Some of the favorites were “Aerial Anime” where acrobats performed famous Anime scenes on silk, “Shakespeare as told by Anime” where actors dressed as Anime characters reenacted famous Shakespeare scenes, and the ever-popular panel “Pokemon Vs. Digimon.” The great debate continues! We are already pumped for next year’s AWA convention. Only 362 more days to go…

ANIME WEEKEND ATLANTA FIELD TRIP

On Saturday, September 27th, the FSAPS Anime Club will traveling to Anime Weekend Atlanta.  AWA is a three-day Japanese Animation and comics convention held annually in Atlanta, Georgia.  While most of the Anime Club members plan to attend this full-day field trip, there may be other Middle School students who are interested in attending as well. All interested 6th - 8th grade students are welcome to accompany the Anime Club on this field trip.   Parent carpooling and chaperones will be coordinated by Ms. Ashley Fichter. We will meet at FSAPS at 8:30 and return by 10:00.   If you are interested in more information about this trip, please e-mail afichter@fultonscienceacademy.org.  Anime Club students can look forward to information and permission forms coming home in hard copy and through e-mail tomorrow.  Additional permission forms for this trip are available in the front office and are due NO LATER than Wednesday, September 24th at 5:00 pm.  Please go to www.awa-con.com to learn more about this convention.

A WONDERFUL TRIP TO WASHINGTON

FSAPS students attended Washington, D.C. between May 1st and May 6th. It was an action packed trip with so much to do and see! A great time was had by all! We had perfect weather, which was wonderful considering all the walking we had to do!

We visited several museums including; The Natural History Museum, The American History Museum, 2 Air and Space museums,The National Geographic Explorer's Hall, and The Newseum. 

We tried to catch a glimpse of The President at The White House and viewed The National Archives. 

We were able to see the breathtaking memorials of Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln and the WWII Memorial. 

We also toured Mt. Vernon, the beautiful home of George Washington. One of the highlights of the trip was that some of our students were chosen to participate in a wreath laying ceremony on his tomb... a very special honor indeed. 

We witnessed the Changing of the Guards at Arlington National Cemetery and saw JFK's eternal flame. 

We visited the National Zoo and the adorable pandas, and had a special tour of the U.S. Capitol.
