FULTON SCIENCE ACADEMY SCIENCE OLYMPIAD TEAM QUALIFIES FOR NATIONAL TOURNAMENT!

The Fulton Science Academy Private School Science Olympiad Team placed second in the State Tournament held at Lambert High School on Saturday, March 21. Their second place finish qualifies them to compete at the National Tournament to be held on May 16 at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. FSAPS students placed first in nine of the 23 Science Olympiad events. “All told, we medaled in 17 events,” said head coach Pam Walsh. “At Regionals, we beat Dodgen Middle School by 8 points and today, Dodgen beat us by 8 points. It just shows how evenly matched these two team are. We’ll work hard to prepare for Nationals and will hopefully represent the state well. We’re honored and excited to attend such a prestigious competition.”

GREAT RESULTS IN 2015 SOCIAL STUDIES FAIR

The FSAPS Social Studies Department would like to congratulate several students for their strong showing at the West Metro Regional Social Studies Fair on Saturday, March 14th. Students from neighboring counties converged on Lake Ridge Elementary School in Clayton County to compete in the fair. FSAPS sent 3 projects representing various social science disciplines and were well-rewarded for their hard work.

Each of our three students received a ribbon for their projects at the fair:
6th grader Arul Selvakumar received a second place ribbon for his project, “What is the Threat of Trash Vortex from Oceanic Gyres to Humanity?”

Isabella Sims, a fellow 6th grader, received third place for her project, “America’s Horse: Identifying Reasons for the Recent Increase in ‘Unwanted’ Horses in the U.S.”
Sarah Ahmed, an 8th grader, also placed third with her project, “How Do Immigrants Affect the U.S. Economy?”

Thank you to all of the students and their teachers for making this year’s FSAPS Social Studies Fair a success. A lot of hard work went into these projects, and although only a few could progress to this level, we felt there were many deserving of the honor. We are very proud of all of our students that participated in the fair this year and are excited by this success at the regional level.

BALLOON ROCKET RACES IN KINDERGARTEN

Newton’s Law of Action and Reaction states that when an object is pushed, it pushes back. Kindergarten students learned this firsthand by using a balloon, a straw, and a piece of string! The walls of the balloon push the air out as it opens. Likewise, when the balloon pushes against the air, the air pushes back. As a result the balloon travels along the string that it is attached to. Not only did this experiment demonstrate cause and effect, action and reaction, and involve gas (the state of matter we are currently studying)- it was tons of fun. Even our youngest students thrive on competition!

JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH - THE MUSICAL FIELD TRIP

On Friday, March 20th the Kindergarten - 5th Grade students traveled to the Alliance Theatre in downtown Atlanta to see James and the Giant Peach - The Musical. This was a fun musical based on the book written by Raold Dahl. It showed the story of a young English orphan beginning to image a bright future. He went on a journey in a larger-than-life enchanted peach. His companions were a zany bunch of insects brought to life by nimble actors. Out FSAPS students enjoyed the fun songs and silly characters during the performance. Our students were very well behaved and showed great theatre etiquette during the performance. It was a fun day for the FSAPS Elementary students!

1ST AND 2ND GRADERS ENJOYED BRAIN AWARENESS PRESENTATION

1st and 2nd graders had a blast at the Brain Awareness presentation last week! Dr. Arielle Valdez began the presentation with a lesson about our five senses! She explained the process in which our brain reacts when our senses are activated. The students were instructed through a few experiments to test these sensory reactions in our brains. After our discussion, the students were allowed to touch and observe a REAL brain! This was an unforgettable experience!

SCHOOL-WIDE SOCCER TOURNAMENT

Over that last couple of months students competed in a school wide indoor soccer tournament. The tournament was split into two divisions. One division was for the younger students (first-third grade) and the other was for the older students (fourth-eighth grade.)

Students had a great time competing for a cash prize. First place students received $20.00, second place received $15.00, and third place received $10.00. Students had to rally through 30 minutes of intense competition to advance to the next round.

CREATIVE WRITING CLUB

Ms. Ramsey's Creative Writing club has been loving their poetry study! The students started the unit by writing an Autobiographical Poem. These poems are posted outside Ms. Ramsey's classroom, so come take a sneak peak into what your child wrote about themselves! Additionally in our poetry unit, the students have written Cinquains and Haikus. Tomorrow we will be learn about Limericks. After the poetry unit, the students will transition into writing Mysteries. CMP SPEAKER SERIES HOSTED AN ARCHITECT

Mike Riley, partner and vice president of Martin Riley Associates, spoke to our students during our College Mentorship Program. He shared his expertise in architecture and some of the many buildings he has helped develop. Mr. Riley received his Bachelor of Science in Architecture from Georgia Institute of Technology and since then he has primarily coordinated multi-family and commercial projects. The students enjoyed learning more about what it takes to be a successful architect.

CONGRATULATIONS TO FSA THESPIAN SOCIETY STUDENTS FOR THEIR RECENT SUCCESSFUL PERFORMANCES

Fulton Science Academy's Thespian Troupe 89269 did exceptionally well in their individual events at the Junior Thespain Festival this past weekend in Nashville, TN. They scored 3's & 4's out of 4 in almost all categories across the board, which is a tremendous achievement for their first time!

Students had a great time, learned a lot, and are already planning their individual events for next year's festival!

Special congratulations to Chloe Richardson who, with a perfect score, was invited to perform her individual event in the showcase on the main stage! Less than 10% of the students attending the festival were given this honor.

2015 GEORGIA DESTINATION IMAGINATION IS MARCH 28TH

The 2015 GA Destination Imagination Tournament is this Saturday, March 28th!

Everyone is invited to join us at Duluth High School to support our teams and watch their challenge presentations.

We have 3 teams presenting challenges at the tournament:

Please plan to arrive early and consider carpooling as parking will be a little tight.

Make sure to arrive at the performance area early to find a seat as they will not allow anyone to enter while the challenges are being presented.

In addition to all the challenges to watch, there will be exhibitors, vendors, concessions, a silent auction and a cake walk among other activities.

Please also stay or return for the closing ceremonies, so our teams will have plenty of voices cheering for them!

MARCH 17TH KINDERGARTEN MISCHIEF

March 17 morning was filled with mischief and fun for the kindergarteners. Pat the Leprechaun had visited both classrooms overnight and left more than a few surprises! The classrooms definitely looked a little more disheveled than usual and the kids had a great time cleaning up from that pesky leprechaun, but the best part was the riddle-filled scavenger hunt! Students solved clever riddles as a group and traveled around the school to try and find Pat’s pot o’ gold. Alas, he evaded us once again. However, great fun was had by all and the plastic coins we found were almost as exciting as the real thing!

GREAT RESULTS IN STATE MODEL UNITED NATIONS

On March 4th and 5th the FSAPS Model UN team travelled to Savannah to take part in the 17th Annual Coastal Georgia Middle School Model United Nations Conference where they put in a strong showing among the many schools and students in attendance.

The FSAPS Model UN team brought home an honorable mention trophy for their performance in the competition. In addition, several students received individual awards for the outstanding representation of their respective countries.

Three students were given the distinguished delegate awards for their accomplishments, Kian Nijaf representing Bangladesh in the Human Rights Council as well as Shreya Rekapalli representing Cameroon and Chloe Richardson representing Cote d’Ivoire, both in the African Union.

Four students received honorable mention awards for their work in the conference. Jaeden Amiri-Owens (Azerbaijan) and Sophie Richardson (Cameroon) were singled out for their work in the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, as was Neharika Marupudi (Azerbaijan) in the Human Rights Council. In the General Assembly, representing the country of Cameroon, Vishal Balyan also received recognition for his work.

Congratulations to the entire team for the hard work they put into preparing and competing in the conference!

Elementary Science Olympiad Students Advance to State Competition!

The hard work of the Elementary Science Olympiad students paid off this past Saturday, March 7th at the State Qualifying Competition. Our Elementary Science Olympiad students completed against 17 other teams and placed 2nd Overall as a team earning themselves a spot in the State Competition in May!! Head Coaches Ms. Minor and Ms. P could not be more proud of our ESO students and how well they represented FSAPS at the competition. GREAT RESULTS IN LANGUAGE OLYMPIADS!

This year semi finals of Language Olympiad was held in Jacksonville, Florida. Our students participated to English Olympiad, Spanish Olympiad and Turkish Olympiad in the categories of singing and poetry. We had the highest number of participants and got the chance of going for finals which is going to be on 16th of May, in Jacksonville. The students qualified for finals are as follows:

THE GREAT MAIL RACE

As part of a social studies (U.S. geography) and language arts (letter writing) collaborative project, the fourth and fifth grade classes of FSAPS are participating in the national Great Mail Race! Each student wrote a friendly letter to one or more fourth or fifth grade classes in different states around the country. Students were assigned states via a raffle process, and each student wrote 2-4 letters to one school of their choice in each of their assigned states.

We will be keeping track of the replies we receive by pinning them onto a large map of the United States, and we hope to receive at least one reply from each of the fifty states before the school year ends!

FSAPS CELEBRATES Dr. SEUSS' BIRTHDAY!

This past Friday, March 6th FSAPS celebrated Dr. Seuss’ Birthday! Every student from Pre-K through 8th grade entered the school to special surprises to celebrate the day. Thing 1 and Thing 2 greeted middle school students who dressed up with a hat, bow tie to decorate, and special treat (because you’re never too old for a little Seuss). Everyone who was dressed in black received a set of whiskers, red and white striped hat, and black nose on their faces to be “The Cat in the Hat.” By the end of 1st period we had an entire school of Cat in the Hats!!

Elementary students enjoyed an afternoon-long journey through the wonderfully wacky world of Dr. Seuss’ most famous stories. Students rotated through all the elementary classrooms, collecting Dr. Seuss themed prizes to put in their goodie bags, hearing a story, and then completing activities based on the book they just heard.

After listening to Bartholomew and the Oobleck, students used Elmer’s glue, Borax, food coloring, and water to concoct their own gooey Oobleck. The reading of One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish preceded the measuring activity geared towards creating Dr. Seuss “Silly Soup.” The imaginative illustrations of The Lorax served as inspiration for some very creative art projects. The Foot Book got the students moving with some fun games inspired by this classic story. Finally, students enjoyed cooking projects and language arts activities following the story Green Eggs and Ham.

ELEMENTARY SCIENCE OLYMPIAD LOCK-IN

Thank you to all the families who came out to support our Elementary Science Olympiad lock-in! It was a wonderful night full of hard work, delicious food, and fun with friends! Throughout the night, students were rotating to different stations to practice their event. They were given the opportunity to work closely with their event coach, attend a study session in the computer lab with their partner, enjoy some free time on the playground, and end the night by practicing with their coaches once more. We are very proud of the students' hard work and dedication this year! Please wish the FSA Elementary Science Olympiad team good luck this week, as they will be attending the Regional Qualifier Competition in Cumming this Saturday!

SPRING BOOK DRIVE & BOOK CHARACTER DRESS UP DAY

BOYS vs. GIRLS
Bring in gently used books from now till March 31st and put them in the bins in the front office. We are requesting books for adults and children such as; children's books, juvenile fiction, adult fiction, historical fiction, self-help, business books, cookbooks, etc. The winners will receive a frozen treat as their reward.

Anyone bringing in two or more books can participate in a literary character dress up day on Thursday March 26th.

Please make sure that your book character costume is approved by your Language Arts teacher.

Books will be used to stock our library shelves or used to trade in for more books through our partner Read-It-Again.

Spirit Night - Join us at Read-It-Again on Friday March 27th 4-8pm.

$1,033 COLLECTED FOR PENNIES FOR PATIENTS

Pennies for Patients charity ended last Friday, collecting $1033. Science department would like to thank to all the parents, teachers, and students for their support to this charity.

Fulton Science Academy Science Olympiad Team Best at Regionals!

It was a sweet victory for the Fulton Science Academy Private School Science Olympiad Team as they won first place in the Regional Tournament held on Valentine’s Day at the University of North Georgia Gainesville Campus. Competition at the tournament was tough as FSAPS was up against perennial rival Dodgen Middle School. “Our students always enjoy competing against Dodgen,” said Head Coach Pam Walsh. “They are such a strong team and our students know they’ve got to be at their best.” The awards ceremony was intense as the lead switch from FSAPS to Dodgen several times, but in the end, FSAPS won by 8 points.

 The top five schools from the tournament will advance to the State Science Olympiad Tournament in March, so FSAPS will be up against Dodgen once again. “We’ve got our work cut out for us to prepare for the State Tournament,” said Walsh. “We know Dodgen and the other teams will be working hard and the competition will only get tougher.” The team’s goal is to qualify for the National Science Olympiad Tournament to be held at the University of Nebraska. Only the top two teams in Georgia will advance.
